Born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, he began his musical life as a chorister at Wakefield Cathedral before studying Classics and Music at Queen’s College, Oxford. He later received the Mendelssohn Scholarship, which enabled him to study composition with Goffredo Petrassi in Rome.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLeighton composed more than 100 published works across orchestral, chamber, instrumental, choral and keyboard repertoire, while also maintaining a career as a pianist and teacher.
