Many of his compositions were dedicated to the flute, even though he didn’t personally play the instrument.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBorn in Germany, Kuhlau moved to Hamburg to pursue piano studies and made his debut as a concert pianist. In 1810, he sought refuge in Copenhagen to avoid conscription in the Napoleonic Army and established himself as a piano teacher and composer. He later became a non-salaried musician in the Danish Court and obtained Danish citizenship.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKnown for his flute compositions, Kuhlau was often referred to as “the Beethoven of the flute” during his lifetime.
