Despite losing all his unpublished manuscripts in a house fire, he left a remarkable legacy of over 200 published works across various genres. Many of his compositions were dedicated to the flute, even though he didn’t personally play the instrument.

Born in Germany, Kuhlau moved to Hamburg to pursue piano studies and made his debut as a concert pianist. In 1810, he sought refuge in Copenhagen to avoid conscription in the Napoleonic Army and established himself as a piano teacher and composer. He later became a non-salaried musician in the Danish Court and obtained Danish citizenship.

Known for his flute compositions, Kuhlau was often referred to as “the Beethoven of the flute” during his lifetime.
