He studied piano with Alfred Cortot at the Conservatoire de Paris in 1940. Damase later studied with  Henri Büsser, Marcel Dupré and composition with Claude Delvincourt for composition. He was also an accomplished pianist touring internationally as a soloist with, Concerts Colonne, the Conservatory Concert Society and the Radio Symphony Orchestra.
