About

Density 21.5 was composed by Edgard Varèse in 1936 and revised in 1946. The piece was written at the request of renowned flautist, Georges Barrère for the premiere of his platinum flute. The first performance of this work took place in 1936 at Carnegie Hall, New York.

The piece takes its title from the density of platinum being close to 21.5 grams per cubic centimetre.

French-born American composer, Edgard Varèse (1883-1965) was an innovator of 20th-century sound production techniques. He studied with Vincent d’Indy, Albert Roussel and Charles Widor.
