The High and Mighty by Daugherty for Piccolo and Piano

Publisher-Peer Music

About

Commissioned by the National Flute Association, The High and the Mighty has become a staple of the piccolo repertoire.

The work is inspired by the years following World War II in America (1945-1961) when air travel was considered luxurious and glamorous. The work is in two movements: the first features a soaring, lyrical tune that is flutter-tongued; the second begins with an angular cadenza that is followed by a robust high-altitude bossa nova.

Michael Daugherty

Composer Michael Daugherty, renowned for winning multiple GRAMMY Awards, has achieved international recognition as one of the ten most performed American composers of concert music, according to the League of American Orchestras. Notably, his orchestral music, which has been recorded by Naxos over the last two decades, has garnered six GRAMMY Awards. Among these accolades are Best Contemporary Classical Composition in 2011 for his piano and orchestra piece “Deus ex Machina” and in 2017 for his cello and orchestra composition “Tales of Hemingway.”

Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1954, Michael Daugherty is the eldest of five brothers, all of whom pursue professional careers in music. During his formative years, Daugherty studied composition under several eminent 20th-century composers. These notable figures include Pierre Boulez at IRCAM in Paris (1979), Jacob Druckman, Earle Brown, Bernard Rands, and Roger Reynolds at Yale (1980-82), as well as György Ligeti in Hamburg (1982-84).

From 1980 to 1982, Daugherty served as an assistant to jazz arranger Gil Evans in New York. Since 1991, he has held the position of Professor of Composition at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, where he actively mentors many of today’s most promising young composers. Additionally, Daugherty frequently receives invitations to perform and collaborate with professional orchestras, festivals, universities, and conservatories worldwide.

Daugherty’s published music is made available through Peermusic Classical/Faber Music, Boosey & Hawkes, and Michael Daugherty Music.
