About

Written in 1971 in Tokyo and dedicated to Aurèle Nicolet, “Voice for Solo Flautist” was inspired by an excerpt from Shuzo Takiguchi’s “Handmade Proverbs”: “Qui va la? Qui que tu sois, parle, transparence!Who goes there? Speak, transparence, whoever you are!“.

An array of techniques are used in this solo work including percussive key tapping, tongue clicks, notes played at the same time the flautist sings, shouts, speaks or hums into the flute, quarter, overtones, multiphonics, chords (via specified split note fingering), trills, flutter tonguing, and tremolos amongst others. The words of the brief poem are entwined throughout the piece in both French and English.

Toru Takemitsu

Born in Tokyo, Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996) was a self-taught composer, deeply influenced by post-war radio broadcasts featuring Debussy, Copland, and Schoenberg. At the age of 20, he marked his debut with the piano piece “Lento in Due Movimenti.” Takemitsu found creative inspiration from exceptional teachers like Toshi Ichiyanagi, who introduced him to the European avant-garde, and Fumio Hayasaka, who acquainted him with film music and connections to Akira Kurosawa.

With an avant-garde style, Takemitsu seamlessly merged diverse art forms such as modern painting, theatre, film, and literature. His compositions featured tape recorder collages and musical depictions of natural phenomena. By masterfully juxtaposing Eastern and Western musical traditions, he often used symbolic metaphors to represent Japanese gardens. Alongside his orchestral and chamber works, Takemitsu ventured into popular music genres like jazz and pop, crafting about a hundred film scores and arranging iconic pop classics in his “12 Songs for Guitar.”

Takemitsu’s illustrious career garnered numerous accolades, including the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition, the Glenn Gould Prize, and the UNESCO-IMC Music Prize. His artistic legacy remains an enduring inspiration to audiences worldwide.
