Robert Ramskill
Robert Ramskill was born in Leeds in 1950. He studied music at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, under the guidance of Ian Parrott and David Harries. In 1975, he became a Lecturer at the Coventry School of Music, and currently holds the position of Principal Lecturer in Music at Coventry University, overseeing the University’s two B.A. music courses.
Ramskill’s compositions cater to a wide range of musicians, from young and amateur players of varying abilities to professionals. His repertoire includes orchestral and choral pieces, piano compositions, works for different wind and brass ensembles (including wind and brass bands), and music for various chamber ensembles.
Among his notable works are an anthem composed for the choristers of St. Paul’s Cathedral, a Tuba Concerto written for the tuba virtuoso Colin Sneade, a Piano Concerto premiered by Julian Hellaby and the Leamington Chamber Orchestra, and a ‘Jazz Impromptu’ for violin and piano, which was selected for the ‘UK and Eire Composers’ Platform and performed in the Purcell Room, London.
As an arranger, Ramskill is actively involved in contributing arrangements for BBC Television and Radio programs, particularly for BBC 1’s ‘Songs of Praise.’ Notably, he wrote three arrangements for the 40th-anniversary edition of the program in 2001, featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra and The Royal Society Chorus, among other choirs.
Moreover, Ramskill has authored numerous albums of music for the Brasswind Publications catalogue, with several solo brass pieces from these albums included in the current syllabuses of major practical examination boards. He recently received a commission (supported by the Arts Council of England) to compose a piece for two pianos, which was performed in several locations by Peter Noke and Julian Hellaby.
