Piet Swerts

Dr. Piet Jozef Swerts (1960-) is a Belgian composer, conductor, and pianist. His extensive catalogue includes more than 240 works, spanning stage, orchestral, chamber, choral, vocal, and piano compositions.

He studied at the Leuven College of Arts (LUCA) Campus Lemmens from 1974 to 1989, obtaining ten first prizes and, for the first time in the institute’s history, the special Prize Lemmens Tinel for composition and piano with great distinction. Notable teachers included Alan Weiss (USA) and Robert Groslot.

Since 1982, Dr. Swerts has been a Professor of Composition and Orchestration at the same institute, now associated with the Catholic University of Leuven. He also served as a guest professor in various institutions across Europe.

As a composer, he received over ten awards, including the Baron Flor Peeters Prize (1983), the Prize of the Belgian Artistic Promotion (1985), and the SABAM Prize (1986). His works have been commissioned by prestigious organizations and have earned international recognition.

In 1993, his violin concerto Zodiac was selected as the compulsory concerto for the finals of the International Queen Elisabeth Competition for Violin, and he received the Grand Prix in the International Queen Elisabeth Composition Competition.

Dr. Swerts has also ventured into conducting, guest-conducting in various countries. His compositions have been performed and recorded worldwide.

In 2011, he earned a Doctor Phd in Arts, and his diverse body of work continues to be celebrated through new commissions and premieres. He is currently working on a Cello Concerto for the National Orchestra of Belgium.
