Dave Smith
Dave Smith (1949-) is an English composer, arranger, and musical performer. He has been associated with the English School of experimental music since 1971.
After attending Solihull School, he pursued music studies at Magdalene College, Cambridge. During the 1970s, he was part of the Scratch Orchestra and various composer/performer ensembles. He collaborated with John Lewis in a keyboard duo, playing minimalist and systemic works by British and American composers, including early pieces by Philip Glass. Smith was also involved in projects with Michael Parsons and Howard Skempton, a short-lived five-piano group with Lewis, Michael Nyman, Orlando Gough, and Benedict Mason, and the People’s Liberation Music group led by Laurie Scott Baker, Cornelius Cardew, and others. He played in John White’s Garden Furniture Music Ensemble with Mason and Gavin Bryars from 1977 onwards, maintaining a close connection with the music of White, Bryars, and Cardew.
In the 1980s, he co-founded the English Gamelan Orchestra and Liria, pioneering British groups specializing in Javanese classical and Albanian folk music, respectively.
While his early music leaned towards minimalism (process or systems music), Smith’s style evolved into a diverse range of ideas, incorporating abstract and referential elements. His influences span from Alkan, Ives, and Szymanowski to Albanian folk music, Duke Ellington, Tom Dissevelt, and collaborators he has worked with. His music includes recital-length solo Piano Concerts, showcasing a variety of styles, many of which have been performed by John Tilbury.
About the Piccolo
The piccolo belongs to the woodwind family of musical instruments. It has similar fingerings to a regular transverse flute, but it produces a sound one octave higher. In Italian, it is known as the “ottavino.” Piccolos are frequently used in orchestras, marching bands, and wind ensembles to add sparkle and brilliance to the overall sound by doubling the violins or flutes with their one-octave transposition upwards.
