Giovanni Sgambati

Giovanni Sgambati (1841-1914) was a renowned Italian pianist, conductor, and composer. He played a pivotal role in revitalizing instrumental and symphonic music in Italy during the late 19th century. Born in Rome to an Italian father and English mother, Sgambati received early education in Trevi, where he gained experience in singing and conducting. He settled in Rome in 1860 and devoted himself to promoting German music, which was relatively unfamiliar in Italy at the time. With guidance from Franz Liszt, who was also in Rome during that period, Sgambati conducted concerts and showcased his piano skills.

Between 1864 and 1865, Sgambati composed several notable works, including a quartet, two piano quintets, an octet, and an overture. He conducted the premiere of Liszt’s Dante Symphony and acquainted himself with Richard Wagner’s music during a visit to Munich with Liszt. In 1870, Sgambati published his first album of songs, and his first symphony premiered in 1881 at the Palazzo del Quirinale. He gained recognition in England through performances of his symphony and piano concerto during two visits in 1882 and 1891.

Besides his own compositions, Sgambati actively promoted the music of other composers, such as Dante Alderighi. He conducted Italian premieres of significant works, including Beethoven’s third and seventh symphonies, as well as Liszt’s Dante Symphony and Christus oratorio.

In his later years, Sgambati focused on teaching and played a vital role in establishing Rome’s first public music school in 1876. His impressive repertoire included a Requiem Mass, two symphonies, a piano concerto, chamber music, songs, and piano pieces, all of which gained enduring acclaim.
