Giovanni Battista Serini

Italian composer, Serini (1710-c.Late 1760s/Early 1770s) began when he relocated to Venice with his father, a skilled violinist, around 1714. Under the guidance of Angelo Galuppi, a musician and barber, and father to the renowned Baldassare Galuppi, Serini received his early musical training.

In the 1730s, Serini’s talent blossomed, evident in his earliest known compositions – four symphonies in the Milanese style. He further solidified his reputation with eight additional symphonies, part of an anthology assembled by Andrea Bernasconi for the Ospedale della Pieta in Venice. Moreover, Serini found success as an opera composer, with his works performed in Venice and Bergamo during the 1730s and 1740s.

In 1750, a new chapter in Serini’s life unfolded as he left Italy and settled in Bückeburg, near Hanover, Germany, where he served as a court composer under Count Wilhelm Schaumburg-Lippe. Throughout his tenure, Serini composed a rich variety of works, including concertos, symphonies, duets, trios, church music, and cantatas.

The outbreak of the Seven Years’ War prompted Serini and Angelo Colonna, the Buckeburg concertmaster, to journey to Prague before ultimately joining the household of British diplomat George Cressener. Serini took on the role of a music tutor for Cressener’s daughter and accompanied the diplomat to various places like Maastricht and Regensburg. In Bonn, their final settlement, we lose track of Serini’s whereabouts after January 1766, indicating that he may have passed away in the late 1760s or early 1770s.
