The sonata was originally written for the ‘Guitarre D’Amour’ or ‘Arpeggione’. This was a type of enlarged guitar that was bowed in a cello style. The instrument did not survive longer than a few years, but this piece by Schubert is a lovely reminder.
The opening Allegro Moderato is built around a wistful melody. A second theme proceeds in gentle gusts of semiquavers. The Adagio is a rich but introverted musing on an almost hymn-like subject. Towards the end, Schubert invites the soloist to improvise a brief transition into the final, multi-sectioned Allegretto.
Franz Peter Schubert
Franz Schubert (1797-1828), an Austrian composer, was a prominent figure in Classical and Romantic music. He received early music education from his father and brother Ignaz and later studied with renowned musicians including Wenzel Ruzicka and Antonio Salieri.
He displayed exceptional talent in melody and harmony, particularly in his songs (lieder) and chamber music. In 1814, he composed his masterpiece “Gretchen am Spinnrade” (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel), which marked the creation of the German lied.
Notable compositions include Symphony No. 9 in C Major (The Great; 1828), Symphony in B Minor (Unfinished; 1822), masses, and piano works.
He composed over six hundred secular vocal works, seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music and a vast array of chamber and piano music.

Sir James Galway-Flautist
Renowned flautist, Sir James Galway has performed worldwide, has 98 albums to his name and has sold 30 million recordings. Throughout his extensive career, he has performed with many of the world’s top orchestras and conductors and toured extensively internationally. Galway has also collaborated on film soundtracks such as The Lord of the Rings and partnered with popular artists such as Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Joni Mitchell and Sir Elton John.
A native of Northern Ireland, Galway began his flute studies in Belfast. At the age of 16, he was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, followed by studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Paris Conservatoire. At the age of 21, he embarked on his orchestral career in London’s major opera and symphonic orchestras. He took up the coveted position of solo flautist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Herbert von Karajan in 1969, before becoming one of the very first flautists to establish an international solo career in 1975.
Galway is a strong supporter of the arts and charitable causes and devotes much of his free time to furthering music education, sharing his wisdom and experience with the musical generation of tomorrow.
