Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs) is a captivating musical composition by Spanish composer Pablo de Sarasate, written in 1878 for violin and orchestra. This timeless piece premiered in Leipzig, Germany, the same year. Although inspired by Hungarian folk music, the themes in the composition are not of Romani origin but adapted from Hungarian music pieces, showcasing Sarasate’s innovative approach.
A favourite among violin virtuosos, Zigeunerweisen has remained popular and cherished by audiences throughout the years. It has been recorded by numerous violinists, including Sarasate himself in 1904, alongside fellow composer Juan Manén on piano. Robert Stallman has arranged this virtuosic work for flute and piano, providing a fresh and enchanting adaptation of Sarasate’s celebrated work.
Pablo de Sarasate
Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) was a prominent Spanish violinist, composer, and conductor during the Romantic period. Notable for his exceptional talent and brilliant technique, Sarasate gained fame for his pure and expressive tone.
Born in Pamplona, Spain, he showed remarkable musical aptitude from a young age and began his violin studies with his father at just five years old. His exceptional skills earned him the favour of Queen Isabella II, who supported his studies in Madrid and later in Paris at the prestigious Conservatoire. At the age of seventeen, he won the Premier Prix, the highest honour at the Conservatoire.
Throughout his illustrious career, Sarasate travelled extensively, captivating audiences with his performances across Europe and the Americas. As a composer, he is known for his showpieces, including Zigeunerweisen, Carmen Fantasy, and his four books of Spanish Dances. His virtuosic arrangements and variations on well-known opera themes delighted his audiences and showcased his prowess on the violin.
Sarasate’s impact on the violin world remains profound, and his legacy endures through the Pablo Sarasate International Violin Competition held in Pamplona. His name is also associated with two Stradivarius violins, one of which is preserved in the Musée de la Musique in Paris, bearing the name “Sarasate Stradivarius” in his memory.
