Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was a renowned Russian composer, widely regarded as one of the most beloved and influential in the history of classical music. With a career spanning from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, Tchaikovsky left an indelible mark on the musical world.

Tchaikovsky’s compositions were characterised by their captivating melodies, rich harmonies, and vivid orchestration. Throughout his lifetime, he crafted an extensive body of work, including seven symphonies, eleven operas, three ballets, five suites, three piano concertos, a violin concerto, numerous overtures, choral works, chamber music, and a plethora of songs and piano pieces.

During the 1870s, Tchaikovsky composed several iconic compositions, such as his monumental Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, the emotionally charged opera “Eugene Onegin,” and the brilliant Violin Concerto in D Major. These works solidified his reputation as a masterful composer and brought him international recognition.

In the 1880s, Tchaikovsky continued to produce masterpieces, including his epic Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, which delved into themes of fate and destiny, and the sumptuous ballet “Swan Lake,” the first in his renowned trilogy of ballets. These works demonstrated Tchaikovsky’s ability to weave complex narratives through music, captivating audiences worldwide.

In his final years, he composed his Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, also known as the “Pathétique,” which is regarded as one of his greatest works. Tragically, he passed away shortly after its premiere in 1893, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the most brilliant and influential composers in history.

Vladimir (Ivanovich) Rebikov

Rebikov (1866-1920) was a Russian composer known for his contributions to modern music. He studied at the Moscow Conservatoire before furthering his education in Berlin and Vienna.

He gained recognition with his opera “In the Thunderstorm,” which premiered in Odessa in 1894. Among Rebikov’s most popular works is the melodious waltz from his children’s opera, “The Christmas Tree.”

César Antonovich Cui

Cui (1835-1918) was a Russian composer known for his operas, songs, and piano music. He showed an early talent for composition, drawing inspiration from Frédéric Chopin’s style and receiving lessons in composition.

Cui pursued a career in military engineering. His association with composers Aleksandr Borodin, Mily Balakirev, Modest Mussorgsky, and Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, collectively known as The Five, influenced his musical interests and led him to champion Russian nationalism through his journalism.

While his own compositions had little Russian influence, Cui found success in writing operas based on French sources, such as Victor Hugo, Jean Richepin, Alexandre Dumas père, Guy de Maupassant, and Prosper Mérimée. However, Cui’s true brilliance shone in miniature forms, particularly his short piano compositions and songs.
