Gioachino Rossini

Rossini (1792-1868) was an Italian composer known for his operas, particularly his comic operas like “The Barber of Seville” (1816), “Cinderella” (1817), and “Semiramide” (1823). He displayed a remarkable talent for music from a young age and composed his first opera at 14. Rossini revolutionized opera buffa (comic opera) by incorporating embellished melodies, lively ensembles, and a focus on the music itself rather than the singers.

His success continued with works such as “The Italian Girl in Algiers” (1813) and “The Thieving Magpie” (1817). Later, he moved to Paris where he composed his most famous opera, “William Tell” (1829), showcasing his talent for larger-scale dramatic works. However, at the age of 37, Rossini ceased composing for the theatre. During his retirement, he turned his attention to religious compositions, including the “Stabat Mater” (1832) and the “Petite Messe Solennelle” (1864).
