Rhené-Baton
René-Emmanuel Baton, also known as Rhené-Baton (1879-1940), was a French conductor and composer from Courseulles-sur-Mer, Normandy. However, his family roots were in Vitré, neighbouring Brittany. At 19 years old, he returned to the region, and his compositions often reflected his deep affection for the area. Rhené-Baton maintained strong connections with prominent composers of the Breton cultural renaissance, including Guy Ropartz, Paul Le Flem, Paul Ladmirault, and Louis Aubert. His efforts as a conductor were dedicated to broadening the appreciation of classical music.
He received piano education at the Paris Conservatoire and studied music theory under André Gedalge. Starting his career as a chef de chant at the Opera-Comique in 1907, he later became the musical director of various orchestral groups, notably the Society of Saint Cecilia in Bordeaux and Angers Société populaire (1910–1912).
In 1910, he was chosen to head the “Festival of French Music” in Munich, Germany. Renowned impresario Serge Diaghilev requested him to conduct the Ballets Russes in London and South America (1912–1913). During World War I, he led the Dutch Royal Opera (1916–18) and conducted summer concerts of the Residentie Orchestra in the Kurhaus of Scheveningen (1914–19).
He composed orchestral pieces, chamber music, instrumental works, songs and a large number of piano works.
