Pictures of Childhood” is a delightful work with four melodic pieces, each inspired by the composer’s friends’ infant children. The music captures the innocence of childhood with an uncomplicated and evocative style, pleasing both performers and listeners.
One enchanting instance is seen in “Lullaby for Laura,” which soothed Laura to sleep in her mother’s arms during its first performance. Another piece, “Tallulah’s Tune,” draws rhythmic inspiration from the child’s name it represents.
“Poppy’s Waltz” finds its origins in the playful demeanour of a little blonde girl observed in a neighbour’s garden, while “Keris Mae” was inspired by the playful nature of a child named Keris Mae, whom the composer encountered in a playground.
The premiere of “Pictures of Childhood” took place in London on August 1, 2005, with Rachel Smith as the performer, accompanied by Rachel Fryer. The piece’s immense appeal led to its recognition as a finalist in the 2012 National Flute Association’s Newly Published Music Competition.
Paul Lewis
Paul Lewis, a British composer, was born in 1943 in Brighton, England. He began learning the piano at nine while attending Brighton College. At the age of twelve, Laurence Olivier’s film adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Richard III’ with Walton’s music sparked his passion for composing.
Opting to avoid formal training, Paul left school at fifteen to delve into music publishing, gaining insider knowledge of the music business. By nineteen, his orchestral pieces were recorded by production music libraries and featured in cinema newsreels. At twenty, he joined ABC Television as Assistant Musical Adviser, composing his first major TV drama score.
Over his forty-seven-year career, Paul scored over 150 TV series and one-offs, spanning high drama to award-winning children’s comedy like ‘Woof!’ and ‘Bernard’s Watch.’
His early library compositions remain popular, heard in TV series like ‘Sponge Bob Square Pants,’ ‘Flog It,’ ‘Top Gear,’ and ‘Hairy Bikers.’ In 1997, he gained recognition as one of Britain’s ‘Legends of Light Music.’
Ten years ago, Paul shifted focus to concert works, creating a catalogue of over 150 published pieces, including concertos, orchestral overtures, and chamber music. With a particular fondness for the harp, his compositions feature in examination syllabuses.
Internationally acclaimed, Paul conducted concerts worldwide, premiering commissioned works in America, New Zealand, Italy, and Turkey.
