About

Between 1801 and 1807, Niccolò Paganini composed the 24 Capricci for solo violin, showcasing his extraordinary technique. Each etude explores different aspects of his musical brilliance. Published in 1820, the Capricci were dedicated to ‘all artists,’ with individual pieces having specific dedicatees.

Over time, renowned composers like Robert Schumann arranged these captivating caprices for other instruments, adding their artistic touch. Today, the Capricci remain among Paganini’s most famous compositions, celebrated for their technical prowess.

This is an arrangement for solo flute by Herman and Wummer.

Niccolò Paganini

Niccolò Paganini (1782-1840) was an influential Italian composer and violin virtuoso of the 19th century. Born in Genoa, Italy, he displayed remarkable musical talent from an early age and made his debut in 1793. Paganini’s performances garnered widespread acclaim during his tours, and he achieved great success in Vienna, Paris, and London.

Despite his brilliance as a musician, Paganini faced financial challenges, indulging in gambling and romantic affairs. At one point, he even pawned his violin to settle debts. Nevertheless, his captivating performances, marked by brilliant improvisations and showmanship, left audiences awe-struck. He was known for using trick effects during concerts, like playing on the remaining strings after severing one or two violin strings.

As a composer, Paganini left a lasting legacy, creating a vast body of work, including six violin concertos, 24 Caprices for Solo Violin, 12 sonatas for violin and guitar, six quartets for violin, viola, cello, and guitar, and numerous other pieces for violin and orchestra. His enigmatic persona and legendary stories surrounding his life further added to his mystique. Paganini’s generosity and acts of kindness, such as supporting composer Hector Berlioz, revealed a different side of his character. Despite facing myths and rumours, his legacy as a virtuoso and composer endures, inspiring generations of musicians worldwide.
