Title-Nesting of cranes
A Japanese Traditional shakuhachi piece

About

The Japanese shakuhachi, a bamboo flute with a history dating back to the 8th century, holds a rich tradition. Among the renowned pieces in its solo repertoire is “Tsuru-no-Sugomori.” Wil Offermans skillfully transcribed this piece for the flute, preserving its distinctive rough sound and robust structure. In his work, he skillfully blends traditional Japanese music with contemporary flute-playing techniques.

Wil Offermans

Wil Offermans graduated from the Brabants Conservatory, Holland, in 1983, specializing in classical flute under the guidance of Cecilia Oomes, Lucius Voorhorst, and Raymond Delnoye. Additionally, he pursued studies in improvised music with Willem Kühne. In 1982, he embarked on a study tour to the USA, where he had the opportunity to meet and learn from esteemed flautists like Robert Dick, Leone Buyse, James Newton, and Hubert Laws.

During 1985 and 1986, Wil Offermans embarked on a remarkable seven-month worldwide flute performance project titled “Round About 12.5.” This solo journey took him to 18 countries across Europe, Africa, Asia, North and South America. His performances not only included concerts but also involved extensive research on various ethnic flutes.

Throughout his career, Wil Offermans has showcased his musical talents in diverse settings worldwide. He has appeared as both a soloist and collaborator with notable musicians such as Kazushi Saito, Tetsu Saito, Mototeru Takagi, Michihiro Sato, Sawai Kazue, Takehisa Kosugi, Llorenc Barber, Paul Termos, and Jack Palinckx, among others. With Junko Ueda (biwa & voice), he has performed across Europe, the US and Canada, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Colombia, and Indonesia, participating in prestigious festivals like Festival d’été de Quebec, Musique Action Nancy, and the Singapore Festival of Arts.

In recognition of his contributions to the field, Wil Offermans was honoured with the Kuiper Prize in 2002 by the Dutch Flute Society. Notably, in 2014, he composed “Eternal Winds” for 500 flutes to commemorate the anniversary concert of the Dutch Flute Academy, performed by Emily Beynon.
