Alain Moëne

Alain Moëne is a French composer, born in 1942. Originally a law student, he pursued his passion for music and received training at the Lyons Regional Conservatory and later at the Paris Conservatoire. There, he studied under esteemed composers Jean Rivier and André Jolivet. Recognized for his talents, he was awarded the Georges Enesco Prize of the Sacem in 1977.

Throughout his career, Alain Moëne has crafted a diverse repertoire, showcasing his creativity and innovation. His compositions encompass solo instruments, such as “Emone” for viola (1973) and “Pour Piccolo” (2008), as well as chamber music, including the “Trio” for oboe, violin, and cello (1987) and the “Quartet” for clarinet, horn, violin, and cello (1990). In the realm of orchestral music, he has produced pieces like “Les lunes improbables” (1974) and “Deux” (1998).

One of Alain Moëne’s distinct characteristics as a composer is his affinity for unconventional groupings and unique combinations of instruments. Examples of this can be found in his works like “Glaukos” for six voices and brass quintet (1976) and “Monogatari” for baroque instruments and traditional Japanese ensemble (2010).

While dedicating himself exclusively to composition now, Alain Moëne had a remarkable professional career within ORTF and Radio France. Notably, he served as the artistic director of the Orchestre National de France from 1976 to 1983 and as the director of the festival Présences from 1999 to 2001.
