About
The concerto features an introduction, three movements, and a coda, played continuously. Motives recur in various forms, following the Intro-A-B-A-C-Coda structure. The harmonic language is traditional yet non-tonal, with exceptionally fast trills by the soloist. The introduction evokes the ambience of bright northern summer nights, hence the subtitle “Nordic Nights.
The Kuopio Conservatoire’s Chamber Orchestra (CAMIS) commissioned the double flute concerto for their concert in Berlin. A version for flute and strings also exists.
Herbert Lindholm
Lindholm was born in Finland in 1946. He studied flute with Juho Alvas at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, earning his Diploma in Flute Performance in 1972. From 1969 to 2009, he served as the principal flute teacher at the Kuopio Conservatoire of Music and Dance in Finland. Additionally, Lindholm pursued studies in conducting with Jorma Panula and Jussi Jalas, as well as composition with Sakari Mononen and Joonas Kokkonen. He has presented concerts and master classes featuring his own works in Finland and abroad, including Sweden, Spain, and Norway. Since 1993, he has been a member of the Society of Finnish Composers, and he assumed the role of Director of Music in 2010.
Lindholm’s repertoire primarily consists of flute chamber music. His musical language is melodic and free-tonal, often evoking ancient mysticism. As a composer and educator, Lindholm seeks to bridge the gap between traditional and modern musical styles. He aspires to create music that is idiomatic for the instruments and comfortable for musicians to play.
