Paul Hindemith

German composer, Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) was also a much-respected violist, violinist, musical theorist, teacher and conductor.

He played a vital role in revitalising tonality during the first half of the 20th century. Hindemith was a pioneer in writing Gebrauchsmusik, compositions for everyday occasions, reflecting a functional trend in postwar Germany.

Hindemith, who considered himself a craftsman rather than an artist, undertook various musical jobs from an early age, which contributed to his facility and matter-of-factness in composing. His early works included chamber music, song cycles, and the opera “Cardillac.” Hindemith’s greatest work, “Mathis der Maler,” about painter Matthias Grünewald’s struggles with society, faced Nazi censorship due to its perceived opposition to Nazi ideology. He fled Germany for Turkey, where he established a Western-style music education system and taught at the Ankara Conservatory.

Hindemith’s music demonstrated anti-Romantic and inventive qualities, and his Kammermusik series stood out for its unconventional instrumentation. As an opponent of the 12-tone school of Arnold Schoenberg, Hindemith formulated a harmonic system based on an expanded traditional tonality, expounded in his work “The Craft of Musical Composition.” Throughout his career, he composed notable works such as the Violin Concerto, Cello Concerto, and Symphonic Metamorphoses After Themes by Carl Maria von Weber.
