Philippe Hersant was born in Rome in 1948 and currently resides and works in Paris. After completing his musical studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he studied composition under André Jolivet, he received a scholarship to study at Casa Velasquez from 1970 to 1972, and later at Villa Medici from 1978 to 1980.
Hersant’s music revolves around the theme of memory, both near and distant, with a focus on repeated and almost obsessive memories. He incorporates sound, mental, and even musical images, often utilizing quotes with semantic value in his compositions, especially when working with texts, stage productions, or films.
His extensive catalogue comprises over a hundred works written for various ensembles, including choirs, orchestras, solo instrumental music, chamber music, operas like Le Château des Carpathes and Le Moine noir, and ballet music for the Paris Opera, Wuthering Heights. Notably, his choral opera Tristia, commissioned by Teodor Currentzis and the Opera de Perm in Russia, received acclaim with performances across various international venues. Recently, his new opera Les Éclairs, with a libretto by Jean Echenoz, premiered at the Opéra-Comique in November 2021.
Philippe Hersant is highly esteemed in the music world and has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Grand Prix Musical de la Ville de Paris, Grand Prix SACEM de la Musique Symphonique, Grand Prix de la Fondation Del Duca, Grand Prix Lycéen des Compositeurs, Prix Musique awarded by the SACD, and three Victoires de la Musique Classique.
