Johann Adolph Hasse
Johann Hasse, a German composer (1699-1783), was a renowned composer of Italian style opera. He began as a singer but quickly made his mark as a composer with his debut opera “Antioco” in 1721. Studying under Nicola Porpora and Alessandro Scarlatti in Italy, Hasse’s opera seria “Sesostrate” (1726) brought him widespread recognition, earning him the nickname “il Sassone” (“the Saxon”).
After marrying the celebrated mezzo-soprano Faustina Bordoni, he served as the music director of the Dresden Opera and left behind a remarkable legacy of over 60 operas, numerous intermezzos, oratorios, masses, and instrumental works. Known for their melodic beauty and formal balance, Hasse’s compositions greatly influenced the symphonic development, especially in northern Germany. His music remained immensely popular during his lifetime, securing him a lasting place in the history of opera and the Baroque era.
