About

Edward German’s three-movement suite, initially published in 1889, draws inspiration from his close friend and Welsh virtuoso, Frederick Griffin, to whom it is dedicated.

Composer – Edward German

Sir Edward German (1862-1936) was a prominent British composer born in Shropshire, England. Starting his career as an orchestral violinist and conductor in London, he swiftly gained recognition as an orchestral composer during the mid-1890s. Despite his growing reputation, Edward German dedicated time to composing intimate music for solo instruments and piano, with the majority of his solo wind instrument works originating from this period. In 1928, he was honoured with a knighthood. His music stands out for its lyrical quality and unmistakably English essence.
