John O’Neill

John O’Neill is an established performing musician and instrumental teacher, specialising in jazz and bossa nova. He is best known as the author of educational books for saxophone, clarinet and flute, including the best-selling ‘Jazz Method For Saxophone’. Having first taken up the saxophone while a student of Modern Languages at Trinity College, Oxford, he went on to play the flute and clarinet, studying woodwinds with Don Rendell and improvisation with Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh and Peter Ind.

Since 1979, John has been a professional freelance musician. As a composer, he has written music for dance, theatre, film and television, and as a qualified teacher with nearly thirty years of experience, has taught in many different settings, both in the UK and abroad. He has also worked as an advisory teacher on jazz in relation to the GCSE curriculum in the London Borough of Enfield, and from 1989-92 directed the Enfield Schools Jazz Orchestra.
