Chris Gumbley
Born in Stafford in 1958, Chris Gumbley attended Walton High School and then studied clarinet and piano at Huddersfield School of Music from 1976 to 1979. He has worked as a woodwind teacher, serving at various institutions like Newcastle-under-Lyme School, Stoke-on-Trent College, and for Staffs Education Authority. Chris has had a diverse career as a freelance saxophonist, performing in theatre, classical recitals, jazz gigs, and touring with acts like the Temptations and 4 Tops during the U.K. Tour ’03. He has also played with ensembles such as Saxtet, B.C.M.G., English Chamber Orchestra, Pasadena Roof Orchestra, and Berkley Salon Ensemble.
Currently, Chris holds the positions of Saxophone and Composition Teacher at Birmingham Conservatoire, Examiner for the Associated Board, Director of Stafford International Jazz Festival, and Coach for the Staffs Youth Wind Orchestra. He is actively engaged in freelance performances and serves as Arts Adviser to West Midlands Arts. Private teaching of saxophone, clarinet, and jazz piano remains an ongoing focus.
Chris Gumbley’s passion lies in Jazz, which led him to establish Gumbles Jazz Club in 1987 to promote contemporary jazz in the Midlands. He also organizes an annual jazz weekend and various one-day courses in the region. Additionally, he dedicates time to composing educational and more serious music for wind instruments.
