Jacques Charpentier

Charpentier (1933-2017), a renowned French composer and organist, had a unique musical journey. As a child, he taught himself to play the piano. In 1950, he began studying with Jeanine Rueff and later embarked on a transformative voyage to India. During his 18-month stay in Bombay and Calcutta, Charpentier immersed himself in the rich traditions of Hindu music, shaping his musical evolution.

Returning to France in 1954, Charpentier pursued composition studies under Tony Aubin and delved into the philosophy of music with Olivier Messiaen at the Conservatoire de Paris.

In 1959, Charpentier joined the Jeunesses Musicales de France. In 1974, the organ of Saint-Nicolas-du-Chardonnet in Paris was named after him to honour his accomplishments. Charpentier also founded a centre for Gregorian studies and traditional music, taught orchestration at the Conservatoire de Paris, and served as the Director of Music, Lyrical Art, and Dance at the Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication from 1979 to 1981. Later on, he became the director of music for the city of Nice.

Charpentier’s fascination with India had a profound impact on his musical language. Upon his return, he sought to merge the Eastern influences he had absorbed with his Western musical culture. Guided by Messiaen, he explored the writings of Saint Thomas Aquinas for two years. In 1957, he embarked on a monumental project dedicated to the 72 Carnatic styles of India, representing the fundamental scales of traditional Indian music. This endeavour resulted in the completion of his 72 études Karnatiques in 1984, demonstrating the influence of Messiaen. These pieces treat the piano as a percussive instrument, employing layered resonances and evoking the sounds of Indian instruments.

Charpentier also frequently embraced the neo-classical style, as exemplified in works like Symphonie brève (1957), Sinfonia Sacra pour le jour de Pâques (1965), and Prélude pour la Genèse (1967).
