Bryan Kelly

Bryan George Kelly (1934-) is a composer, conductor, and pianist from Oxford, England. He began his musical journey as a choir boy at Worcester College and attended Southfield Grammar School. Under the guidance of Harold Spicer, the organist and choirmaster of Manchester College, Oxford, he received lessons before furthering his studies at the Royal College of Music with Gordon Jacob and Herbert Howells. Later, he studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris.

Kelly’s teaching career has taken him to various countries, including America, Italy, France, and Egypt. He has taught at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and, since 1963, at the Royal College of Music.

His diverse compositions range from light orchestral pieces and works for brass band to more serious and elaborate orchestral works, such as his Symphony and the Concertante Dances. He has also composed church music, with his Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in C incorporating Latin American rhythms. Some of his notable orchestral works include the Cuban Suite, the New Orleans Suite, Divertissement, and two commissioned works for the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra: the overture Sancho Panza (1969) and the Sinfonia Concertante (1967). Additionally, Kelly has composed for brass band, including works like Brass Bagatelles, the overture Provence, and the Divertimento for Brass.

In addition to his larger works, Kelly has composed instrumental solos and educational music. One of his notable pieces is the Whodunnit Suite for trumpet and piano, which features engaging titles like ‘Poirot (Detective)’, ‘Lavinia Lurex (Actress)’, ‘Colonel Glib (Retired)’, ‘Miss Slight (Spinster of This Parish)’, ‘The Chief Suspect’, and ‘The Chase’. Kelly also wrote the piano piece Tango specifically for Peter Katin in 1961.
