Ernest Bloch

Jewish composer, Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) was born in Switzerland and died in Oregon, USA. His music reflects Jewish cultural and liturgical themes combined with European post-Romantic traditions.

Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) was a highly acclaimed composer of the 20th century, recognized for his exceptional originality. His music enjoyed regular performances throughout his lifetime, especially in the USA, the UK, and Italy. Considered by many as the fourth “B” alongside Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, Bloch garnered immense admiration and won numerous prestigious composition prizes.

Bloch’s vast repertoire encompassed vocal, instrumental, orchestral, and choral works, ranging from grand and powerful compositions to delicate miniatures. His music drew inspiration from various sources, including neo-classical and neo-romantic styles, French and Swiss influences, Chinese and Native American folk traditions, and Gregorian chant. Notable musicians such as Nicola Benedetti, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Steven Isserlis, and Yo-Yo Ma have performed and recorded Bloch’s works, showcasing their enduring appeal.

In addition to his remarkable musical achievements, Bloch held teaching positions at renowned institutions in the USA, leaving a lasting impact on his students and admirers. He also excelled as a conductor, violinist, pianist, and philosopher. Bloch’s diverse interests extended to photography, painting, agate collection, mushroom expertise, and a deep love and concern for nature.

Born in Geneva, Bloch’s musical journey began at a young age, studying the violin and later venturing into composition. He received rigorous training across Europe, collaborating with esteemed teachers and conservatories. After finding success in America, Bloch became a naturalized citizen in 1924. While war loomed in Europe, he returned to the USA with his family in 1939. Bloch’s later years were spent in Agate Beach, Oregon, where he derived great joy from the surrounding nature. He continued to teach at the University of California at Berkeley until his retirement in 1952. Ernest Bloch’s profound impact on the world of music remains evident in his captivating compositions, cherished by musicians and audiences alike.
