A Carol Fantasia for Wind Quintet by Prowse and Haan

Stefan De Haan (1921-2010) was a German-born musician known for his work as a bassoonist, composer, and educator. He began his musical studies in Berlin and Florence before pursuing further education at the Royal School of Music in London, where he had the opportunity to study composition with Herbert Howells and bassoon with Archie Camden.

Based in London, De Haan established himself as a versatile freelance bassoonist, primarily performing with chamber orchestras. He dedicated his time to teaching and mentoring wind groups, youth orchestras, and participating in summer schools. De Haan’s compositional style focused on creating music that brought joy to both performers and audiences alike.

His body of work encompasses compositions for brass and woodwind ensembles, educational music, including children’s records, as well as pieces specifically tailored for school and youth orchestras. Alongside these lighter compositions, De Haan also delved into more serious compositions, including a trumpet and strings concerto, a wind quartet, and a string trio.
