Among his notable compositions for the flute are two concertos, a double concerto featuring the harp, Andante in C, and four beautiful flute and string quartets.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese works were commissioned by Ferdinand Dejean, a Dutch physician and amateur musician, during Mozart’s visit to Mannheim in 1777\/78. Interestingly, Mozart composed an alternative version, the ‘Andante’ KV 315 (285e), for the middle movement of the Concerto in G major KV 313, as it was deemed too challenging either in terms of playing technique or musical complexity for the client. Abel is at his most independent in the harmony, where major and minor keys are juxtaposed and keys with sharps follow keys with flats in close alternation, as in the first movement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe source for this edition is a copy of the score located at the Musikbibliothek der Stadt Leipzig, which must have been corrected in red ink by one of Breitkopf’s diligent house readers back in the 18th century. To be precise, the D-major Flute Concerto was first included in Breitkopf’s catalogue back in 1761.
