About

Although sometimes credited with the composer, Francesco Morlacchi, this piece was instead written by Italian flautist Pietro Morlacchi (1828-1868).

Pietro Morlacchi

Pietro Morlacchi (1828-1868), an Italian flautist and composer, studied the flute at the Milan Conservatory under the guidance of Giuseppe Rabboni from 1843 to 1850. During his time as a student, he composed and published the original fantasy for flute and piano titled “Il Pastore Svizzero” in 1850, along with a version for solo piano.

Morlacchi was born in Lainate, a small town near Milan, and he is regarded as an Italian composer, even though, at that time, the Austro-Hungarian Empire controlled Milan and much of Northern Italy. One of his most renowned compositions, “Il Pastore Svizzero,” is sometimes mistakenly attributed to Francesco Morlacchi (1784-1841), a famous opera composer from Perugia, due to their similar names. However, it is crucial to note that they were two distinct composers with different artistic interests, born 44 years apart.

Throughout his studies, Morlacchi displayed diligence and talent, earning awards for his flute performances. In his final year, he actively dedicated his remarkable composition “Il Pastore Svizzero” to Duke Antonio Litta Visconti Arese, and he actively published the piece in 1850 through the esteemed music publisher Francesco Lucca in Milan.

Pietro Morlacchi’s compositions, including “Il Pastore Svizzero,” continue to be celebrated, and the work actively appears in the historical archives of the Ricordi company.
