Description

Distinguished flautist and teacher, Michel Debost-The Simple Flute’ is a useful and imaginative introduction to playing the flute.  This book is based on the french, Une simple flute. Born in Paris, Debost studied under Marcel Moyes and Gaston Crunelle. People regarded Debost as the successor of Jean-Pierre Rampal.  Some of his achievements include winning five major international competitions over a seven-year span. Holding Principal Flute in the Orchestre de Paris for 30 years. He also replaced Jean-Pierre Rampal as Professor of flute at the Conservatoire de Paris. Over his lifetime, Debost made numerous acclaimed recordings for a variety of major labels, covering French repertoire and a vast array of standards.  After his retirement, Debost decided to write ‘The Simple Flute’, published in 1996. All in all, a huge contributor to the 20th century flute. This alphabetically arranged compendium of advice and insight covers essential techniques such as breathing, articulation, and tone.  Topics like “jaw-boning,” “finger phrasing,” “the little devils,” and other quirky and vexing aspects of flute playing are explored.  This book is full of practical advice on technique and axioms that lend moral support during tough practice sessions, The Simple Flute will be a welcome addition to any serious or novice flautist`s library.  In addition, the book includes original exercises such as “Debost`s Scale Game,” making it an excellent resource for flute teachers. Debost concludes each essay with “In a nutshell” and “Please refer to” boxes. This makes the book easy to browse, dog-ear, and return to again and again. Offering concise, common-sense solutions for flautists of all levels, this book is an ideal reference guide on flute performance.
