Johann George Tromlitz-The Virtuoso Flute Player Book

Description

Johann George Tromlitz-The Virtuoso Flute Player Book is an English translation of ‘Tutor for Playing the Flute’ (1791). The most explicit of the eighteenth-century tutors for flute-playing, it now serves as a record of instrumental practice as well as a useful guide to the performance of German classical music. Johann George Tromlitz was a German flautist, flute maker and composer.  His impressive playing produced strong, trumpet like tones, which made him stand out.  However, not liking the German flutes of the time, he started making his own.  He was the first flute maker to add 8 keys to the flute.  The flute at this time already had a D# and a G# key. Tromlitz firstly added a thumb key for C and two keys for F, later adding a long Bb thumb key. All of these furthered by Theobald Boehm in his system. The Virtuoso Flute Player covers all aspects of flute playing, including intonation, articulation, flute maintenance, posture and breathing, dynamics, ornaments, musical style, cadenzas, and the construction of the flute. This edition is an indispensable manual for players of baroque and modern flutes. The information it contains is invaluable for all musicians, students, and specialists interested in the historically informed performance of German classical music. The text comes annotated with critical notes alongside newly printed original music examples in modern notation. The volume also contains a fingering chart and a historical introduction.
