Burkart and Phelan-Complete Guide to the Flute and Piccolo
Well Researched and easy to read, Burkart and Phelan-Complete Guide to the Flute and Piccolo covers the basic maintenance of the flute and piccolo. This book is an essential part of every flautists collection.
Lillian Burkart and James Phelan founded Burkart-Phelan Incorporated, in 1982. They met while in the employment of Verne Powell flute company. James, an accomplished band instrument repairman, built keys, padded flutes and became general manager. Lillian made flute bodies, keys, padded flutes and piccolos and tested instruments.
Burkart & Phelan – Complete Guide to the Flute & Piccolo looks at the anatomy of flutes and piccolos, focusing on the materials used, how they are constructed and after care. The book covers the construction of the flute scale, with particular interest on tuning. Additional information on padding, corking and also felting leads into maintenance. Information on basic and advanced repairs enters a world not many flautists are aware of. Very importantly, the book talks about cleaning, polishing and also the assembly of the flute, and how this effects the performance of the instrument.
In the same way, this book looks at the maintenance of Piccolos, as they are different to the flute. It covers the production, assembly and care that piccolos require. In addition, there is a section on the construction of head joints. A very interesting read all round.
